Columbia University Courses
The flexibility of the QMSS curriculum is one of the most attractive aspects of the program. While designed to ensure comprehensive training in quantitative methodologies, the structure of the program also provides unparalleled opportunities for students to tailor their coursework to the particular techniques and topics of interest to them. See how real students have made QMSS work for them! (MAKE THIS A LINK)
The foundation of the QMSS curriculum is a set of four core courses that provide rigorous training in social science research techniques and data analysis. Beyond that, students draw on the wide range of courses offered through Columbia’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Business, School of International and Public Affairs, Mailman School of Public Health, and School of Social Work in order to design a course of study that meets with their academic and professional goals.
Conference Attendance
There are numerous associations that hold conferences each year as well as publish journals. We encourage you to take advantage of them, their websites and the opportunity to network and/or present your work-in-progress-thesis at the conferences if you’re in the area. Some of these websites can be good resources for your theses. QMSS will also provide up to $250 per student (based on satisfactory application) to help offset membership and attendance fees. Please contact Christine or Chris if you have questions.
Flexibility and Rigor
Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences (QMSS) is an innovative, flexible interdisciplinary social science Master of Arts degree program at Columbia University that focuses on quantitative research techniques and strategies. Our program attracts individuals who
*are seeking to enhance their research skills for advancement in their careers,
*wish to improve their quantitative skills before advancing to a Ph.D. program
*are looking to enter the quantitative research field.
Engaged students make for a good learning environment, and at QMSS, we attract a diverse applicant pool. Having drawn students in varied fields from more than 30 countries, our students bring a unique range of experience and expertise to the program. Each year about half of our incoming cohort is comprised of international students. Most applicants to the program are returning to academic study after a few years of post-baccalaureate work experience, but each year a handful of students join QMSS directly from undergraduate programs. While the majority of our students enroll full-time, some maintain careers or other endeavors, completing the program on a part-time basis.
While many programs train students in quantitative techniques, few offer an emphasis on written and oral communication about research techniques and findings. These interpersonal and communication skills, in particular, give QMSS graduates an edge whether they are starting off in a new career, returning to a job, or continuing with graduate study
